Congratulations to Christian Whitehead, Headcannon, and PagodaWest for somehow making a far better Sonic game than the actual Sonic team themselves in 2017, as this game is just fantastic in almost every way.Sonic Mania unlockables give you more incentive to replay than the average Sonic game, ranging from new moves based on classic Sonic games to modes that change the way you play. The visuals are vibrant, colorful, and just full of life while staying true to the classic visual formula. ![]() The level designs are great and offer plenty of challenge while also being creative. Despite most of this game consisting of previous stages, this game has 4 new ones, which each are amazing and look fantastic while staying true to classic Sonics level design. ![]() The music in this game is fantastic as well, as it takes some classic music from the Sonic games on the Sega Genesis and adds a more updated sound, while also being fresh, yet still nostalgic with new themes for new stages in this game as well. The boss battles are also great, as not only do they take some elements from previous great boss battles from the Genesis games, but they also feel fresh as most of them have a new twist on them that are very creative and fun. The special stages for collecting Chaos Emeralds are very fun, as they are very similar to how Sonic CD worked, while mixing it with the Sonic 3 and Knuckles special stages with having to pick up blue balls, but only this time, the blue balls make you faster and the rings give you more time. It's an overall very fun and somewhat challenging special stage that really works. This adds a lot of replay value to this game and I think that this was a great idea. Overall, this is just a fantastic game that stays true to the classic sonic formula, while adding so much more to make this game a truly unforgettable game that will live on as one of the best 2D Sonic games ever. ![]()
